While it seems like Stanley travel tumblers are an overnight internet sensation, BuzzFeed News reported on “how everyone on Instagram became obsessed with a previously obscure cup” back in June 2021.
However, the story really began in 2016 when Stanley debuted the Quencher. Sales were lackluster, and by 2019, the Quencher was slated to be shelved. Then three women from TheBuyGuide.com stepped in to save the Quencher and ultimately changed the destiny of Stanley as a company—and how we sip our fave beverages today. Through influencer marketing, Quencher sales grew from $70 million in 2019 to $750 million in 2023.
Because of its popularity at retail, the Stanley Quencher has an equally voracious demand in promo. In fact, the Advertising Specialty Institute (ASI) named the Quencher as the 2023 Product of the Year.
This internet darling isn’t without controversy, however. In January 2024, there was a firestorm around the possibility of lead being used in the production of Stanley drinkware. The company issued a statement that lead is used within the seal for the cup’s vacuum insulation but said that "no lead is present on the surface of any Stanley product that comes into contact with the consumer nor the contents of the product." This hasn’t stopped a lawsuit from being filed against Stanley.
Despite the bad PR and legal filing, Stanley remains one of the hottest drinkware brands on the market. And, at least for now, it seems like the only thing to quench the thirst for the Stanley Quencher is more Stanley Quenchers…and the growing market of high-quality dupes that offer the same look and performance for less.
